Most people had stopped paying attention to the three-day Major League Baseball draft by the time Mitch Glasser was taken in the 39th round.
At Macalester, it's kind of a big deal.
Glasser, a first baseman who grew up in Chicago, was taken by the White Sox after finishing his baseball career by batting .325 this season and striking out only four times in 266 plate appearances as a junior and senior. Macalester tied for the MIAC baseball title when Glasser was a junior but missed the conference playoffs this season.
The announcement on the Macalester web site says that Glasser "is believed to be the first Macalester player selected in the major league draft" and adds that he was a "two-time Jewish Sports Review All-America selection."
For those keeping track, that means the score at Macalester is Rhodes Scholars 9, MLB Draftees 1.
