Three Rivers Park District and Bloomington officials are reviewing proposals from five competing firms that want to land a $14 million contract to upgrade Hyland Lake Park Reserve's ski facilities. Each consultant made a 20-minute presentation to a special meeting of park and Bloomington officials last week.

The project will double the size of the chalet at a cost of $10.3 million, and will upgrade connecting roads, expand parking and make other improvements.

The chalet was built in 1975, with an addition in 1996. It contains food service, merchandise, ski school registration, equipment rental, ski patrol and staff areas. In recent years it has become increasingly cramped, especially on weekends and holidays. The slopes attract about 160,000 skiers and snowboarders annually.

District commissioners are expected to approve a building firm at their next regular meeting on June 14, after hearing from their planning team.

Construction would occur in phases in 2013 and 2014.
