Blaine's girls' golf team recently handed Elk River its first Northwest Suburban Conference loss since 2008.

The Bengals shot a 169 on May 2 at Majestic Oaks, eight strokes better than the Elks. Sisters Hannah and Caroline Andrews shared medalists honors with a 41.

"We are 9-0 in the [conference]," Bengals coach Bill Davids wrote in an e-mail. "Perhaps the biggest difference is that we have seven varsity players capable of shooting quality scores."

Elk River swept the conference matches and 18-hole conference tournaments each year from 2009 to 2011 and was 7-0 going into the Blaine match.

Janu's big weekend

Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Village junior CJ Janu won both the 110- and 300-meter hurdle events last weekend at the Sauk Rapids Mega Meet. In addition, he anchored the 4x200 relay that set a meet and school record time of 1 minute, 30.59 seconds and helped the Panthers win the meet.

Huskies' near perfect pair

St. Anthony Village softball pitchers Sarah DeMars and Becca Bates helped the Huskies to recent victories with strong performances.

DeMars threw a five-inning complete game and allowed only one hit in an 18-0 victory against Breck. Three days later, Bates hurled a no-hitter in an 8-0 victory against St. Croix Lutheran.

Ness joins 100-win club

Elk River/Zimmerman senior tennis standout Ryan Ness surpassed the 100-victory plateau earlier this season, another milestone in a dream season for the Elks.

Coach Randy Ronning estimated Ness is the sixth Elks player to win at least 100 career matches. Teammate Mitchel Brandell is second on the career victories list.

The team is ranked No. 1 for the first time ever. The Elks started this week 23-0-1.

Former coach honored

Former Robbinsdale Cooper baseball coach Charlie Tabor will be recognized on Wednesday for his induction into the Minnesota Coaches Hall of Fame.

The event, called "Tip Your Hat Day," is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. at home against St. Michael-Albertville. Former and current players will be on hand to honor Tabor.
