The multicultural America of today is a nation of many faiths, with a vibrant amount of movement from one belief to another. According to a survey on these dynamics by the Pew Forum on Religious & Public Life, the biggest gains are among those who say they are not aligned with any particular faith. This is viewed as an alarming development in the new documentary "Monumental" (PG for some mild thematic elements), which was not made available for review. The trailer is a grim, doom-laden affair. "All signs tell me something is sick in the soul of our country," declares director/producer/star Kirk Cameron, the star of "Growing Pains" and the Armageddon/Rapture "Left Behind" movies. "We're headed toward disaster if we don't change our course now." To a soundtrack of bombastic guitar power chords, we see flames consuming a street sign at the intersection of Church and State, children with sorrowful, dirt-smudged faces, and the weary stone visage of the Lincoln Memorial. Cameron's quest apparently follows a "National Treasure"-like history/mystery trail leading pilgrims to a path of Biblical righteousness. If you like this kind of thing, this is the kind of thing you like.
