A St. Paul man was fatally shot at the back of a house in the city's Summit-University neighborhood Friday morning.

Leonard A. Christian Sr., 56, was found dead in the rear entrance of a house in the 1000 block of W. Central Avenue near Victoria Street.

Police say they do not think the killing was random. No arrests have been made.

The motive and events leading up to the shooting are under investigation, police said.

"It's still in the infancy stage," Sgt. Paul Paulos said of the investigation.

Someone inside the house called 911 about 3 a.m. to report shots fired. Christian lived in the home, and others were present at the time. Paulos, a department spokesman, said it's unclear who the target was.

Police searched the house in February, but no arrests were made.

In December, the homeowner, Ollie K. Christian, 88, reported that his great-grandson had trashed his bedroom looking for items to steal, then broke a bathroom window and crawled out. The great-grandson, then 23, ran to the front of the house and broke a bedroom window and re-entered the house.

In 2010, St. Paul gang investigators searched the home and recovered a small amount of marijuana and cash.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call police at 651-266-5650.
