No one at Midori's Floating World Cafe saw the car wreck Thursday morning outside the restaurant's front door, but they all heard it, said owner Midori Mori-Flomer.

"It was a loud boom," she said, describing the crash that killed a 92-year-old woman.

A car and a minivan collided in the intersection of E. Lake Street and 27th Avenue S., police said.

The woman was sent to Hennepin County Medical Center but did not survive, according to police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer. Her identity has yet to be released.

The accident shut down E. Lake Street near the Hiawatha light-rail line until 11:30 a.m., Palmer said.

No other details about the crash were immediately available.

Mori-Flomer, talking to a reporter before police announced that the woman had died from her injuries, said she saw emergency medical technicians take her out of the car and put her in an ambulance.

"Hopefully she's OK," Mori-Flomer said. It was just minutes later that police announced the woman had died.
