State Republican operative Chris Tiedeman and his wife, Sara, were severely injured in a two-car crash over the weekend in their hometown of Blaine.

The crash occurred about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, when a car heading north in the 9600 block of Radisson Road crossed into the path of the Tiedemans' southbound car, according to police.

Chris Tiedeman, 35, and Sara Tiedeman, 33, were both in critical condition Monday at Hennepin County Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. Chris Tiedeman, who was a campaign aide for former Gov. Tim Pawlenty, was driving, police said.

The other driver, a 38-year-old woman from Blaine whose name has yet to be released, also was taken to HCMC and was also reported in critical condition.

"Alcohol consumption" by the driver who crossed the center line "may be a contributing factor in the crash," police said in a statement. Police Capt. Kerry Fenner added that officers detected an "odor of alcohol from inside the driver's compartment."

All three people hurt were wearing seat belts, Fenner said.

A CaringBridge Web page for the Tiedemans is encouraging prayers "for healing for Chris and Sara, for the strength of their families, and for wisdom and guidance for their doctors and nurses."

Sara Tiedeman's recent tweets indicate she has been training for the half-marathon that is run in Duluth during Grandma's Marathon weekend in June.
