Johnson Boat Works plan moves forward in White Bear Lake

The Lander Group and @Home Apartments scored a victory Tuesday when the City Council voted 3-2 to approve their plans to develop the city-owned Johnson Boat Works.
But the favorable vote for two conditional-use permits does not mean work on the $19 million Boat Works Commons project will begin anytime soon. While the developer secured zoning entitlements and building variances, the city still has to get approval from the Met Council to amend provisions that won it a $1.38 million Livable Communities Grant in 2008 for a parking deck with a green-roof.
A 232-space underground parking deck has been incorporated into the Lander Group's plan to put up an 85-unit apartment building, 2,400-square-foot restaurant, additional retail space, a community room and a 15,000-square-foot green space.
The parties also have to work out a development agreement and settle on a price for the 1.6-acre parcel on Lake Avenue S., said Anne Kane, city spokeswoman.
