Speed and alcohol are suspected factors in a snowmobile crash that killed a Minnesota man Friday in southwestern Wisconsin, authorities say.

Joseph Gillett, 28, of St. Charles, Minn., was ejected from his snowmobile after he struck a cable strung between two fence posts on private property near Kamrowski Road and Prairie Moon Road, according to the Buffalo County (Wis.) Sheriff's Office. The accident occurred south of Buffalo City and north of Fountain City, near the Mississippi River.

Authorities received the report of the accident at about 3:20 p.m. Friday. Emergency crews tried to resuscitate Gillett at the scene; he was pronounced dead at Winona Community Memorial Hospital.

A second snowmobiler, Thomas Maier, 38, of Buffalo City, was not injured. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is investigating.
