Gophers coach Don Lucia said Michigan Tech started playing a little too aggressively at his team pulled away for a 6-2 victory on Saturday at Mariucci Arena.

"There was some talk going back and forth," Lucia said on his weekly radio show on 1500ESPN. "I don't think that is the way we want to finish a game. I don't think that is the way they want to finish a game.

"It is one of those things that happened. It is regrettable and hopefully it doesn't happen again."

What happened was a handful of penalties, mostly for roughing, on the ice and a shouting match between the coaches. On the Tech side was assistant Billy Muckalt. Lucia and assistant Grant Potulny yelled back at him.

"For the most part it was a cleanly played, well-disciplined weekend," Lucia said. "All of a sudden we started to pull away at the end and you put so much into it. And the game was tied early in the third period. It really becomes one or two plays maybe you would like to say I would have done something different.

"The trash talking got going there at the end. And it kind of escalated."

Tech head coach Mel Pearson tried to call him on Monday, Lucia said. The Gophers coach said that he sent Pearson a text message in response to the missed call and expects the two of them to talk Tuesday. "Sometimes in the heat of the moment things happen that you don't want to happen," Lucia said, "and that happened on Saturday night. The good thing is that it ended peacefully and nothing more came of it."

On Friday, the Gophers lost 3-2 in overtime to the Huskies in what was "a decently played game," Lucia said.

The score probably should have been 0-0 after three periods, Lucia said, because all four goals in regulation time went off a skate or a knee or something.

"When you get into overtime in a situation like that, you are kind of thinking, 'Boy, alright, so if we can just take a point out of here so be it.' " Lucia said. "Disappointing to make the mistake in overtime. Turn the puck over at blue line. And they score 30 seconds into overtime. That was the disappointing part for me: Not coming away with the one point. But that is going to happen."
