Jim Malosky, the winningest coach in NCAA Division II football when his career ended at Minnesota Duluth, died Sunday. Malosky, 82, lived in the Minnesota Veterans Home for the past two years and was recently hospitalized because of pneumonia. His death was caused by respiratory failure, according to the Duluth News-Tribune.

The former Gophers quarterback coached UMD for 40 seasons (1958-97), was 255-125-13 and never missed a game or practice until he suffered a stroke in 1998. He was unable to return to the team as a full-time coach, officially retiring in 1999.

Malosky lettered for the Gophers from 1947-49. He was head coach at Edina Morningside High School when he was hired by UMD in 1958. The Bulldogs won three MIAC titles under Malosky before joining the NSIC, where they won six championships.

UMD's football field was named James S. Malosky Field in 2004, and the NCAA Division II coach of the year award is known as the Jim Malosky Award.
