Newt Gingrich has opened up a lead in the latest poll in Iowa, the state where the first votes in the Republican Party's presidential nomination race will be cast a month from now.
Gingrich has the support of 25 percent of likely caucus participants in the Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas is in second place with 18 percent, followed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 16 percent, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota at 8 percent, Herman Cain, who dropped out of the race Saturday, also at 8 percent, Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 6 percent, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, also at 6 percent, and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, at 2 percent. Eleven percent said they remained undecided.
Gingrich has the potential to increase his support in Iowa, the newspaper said. More respondents chose the former House speaker from Georgia as their second choice than any other candidate.
The survey of 401 likely Republican caucus participants was conducted Nov. 27-30 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points. BLOOMBERG NEWS
