Twin Cities artist Amelia Biewald is a very modern talent with a taste for the kinky past, exotic landscapes, dark recesses and rococo embellishments. She's given to drawing on velvet, carving into vellum, molding leather and garnishing installations with bordello plumage. Her subjects range from the rumored misdeeds of Catherine the Great of Russia (murdered her husband, had an affair with her horse) to grottoes, bondage gear, deviant Romantics and other stuff of legend. (And you thought vampires had all the fun.) Needless to say, all this has boosted a career that includes major awards and fellowships (Skowhegan, Bush, Jerome), national shows and now a return to Minneapolis, where this detail from "The Party" is a must-see.
