1954: Born in Norfolk, Va.

1972: Comes to Minnesota State University, Moorhead, on a football scholarship.

1978: Becomes a sportscaster in Fargo.

2004: Launches a syndicated radio program, "The Ed Schultz Show," from Fargo.

2009: Joins MSNBC; moves radio show to New York City.

Jan. 24, 2011: Moves into Keith Olbermann's prime-time slot.

February 2011: Starts traveling to Wisconsin to show support for protesters of anti-union laws.

May 23, 2011: Gets into hot water after making disparaging remarks about Laura Ingraham.

Aug. 18, 2011: Receives the Paul Wellstone Award at the United Steelworkers convention for his commitment to public service.
