Righthander Kyle Gibson will have reconstructive surgery on his elbow after the initial phase of his rehabilitation program did not go well.
Gibson will have surgery next Wednesday in New York, the surgery will be done by Mets team physician, Dr, David Altcheck, who also operated on Joe Nathan's elbow last year.
"Kyle Gibson has completed the initial phase of the rehab program at our training facilities in Fort Myers," Twins general manager Bill Smith said in an e-mail. "Based on the results, and in consultation with Kyle and our medical staff, the best treatment is to proceed with ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, also known as Tommy John surgery."
