Vikings training camp: Day 1 highlights
- August 2, 2011 - 12:48 AM
Brett Favre never set foot on a Mankato practice field in two years as a Viking. But his old No. 4 jersey made an appearance on Monday.
Sensing the moment, punter Chris Kluwe came out throwing -- not kicking -- at the start of practice. He dropped back a few times and completed 100 percent of his few passes to ... long snapper Cullen Loeffler.
Kluwe, who has created somewhat of a cult following with his Twitter account @chriswarcraft, was walking by some fans on Monday when they yelled out "No. 4!" Kluwe turned and said, "I'm going to get some gray hair dye."First cheer of day
Without team drills, the most popular part of Monday's practice for the fans was the deep-passing drills. That was always a fan favorite when Randy Moss was in his first stint with the team. On Monday, the day the SuperFreak retired, the first loud cheers of the 2011 camp went to ... Juaquin Iglesias, a second-year receiver signed off the Bears practice squad late last season. Iglesias caught a deep ball from Christian Ponder.QB watch
Donovan McNabb came onto the practice field talking with Vikings running back and former Eagles teammate Lorenzo Booker. Then he did, well, nothing. Wearing a red No. 5 quarterback's jersey, McNabb wasn't allowed to practice per rules of the new collective bargaining agreement. Joe Webb took snaps with the first-team offense and showed some good arm strength. Ponder ran with the second unit. Rhett Bomar worked with the third team and struggled to get any kind of zip on the ball.Quote of the day
"I can't prevent an ACL injury, but I can prevent someone from getting heat illness most of the time, and that's really important." -- Vikings head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman, talking about how he talked to the team about the importance of hydration and battling heat- related issues.Injuries
• LT Bryant McKinnie is on the non-football injury list for reasons the team nor McKinnie would specify. Conditioning is believed to be his biggest issue.
• RG Anthony Herrera (knee) is on the physically-unable-to-perform list because he's coming off anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery.
• CB Cedric Griffin (knee) was limited in practice because he's coming off his second ACL surgery in two years.Daily schedule
