The fact Percy Harvin lost his cell phone evidently was part of the reason the Vikings wide receiver did not end up working out at Christian Ponder's recent passing camp in Bradenton, Fla. (I know, I know, but that's the reason Ponder said Harvin gave him.)
While that means Harvin has yet to see the quarterback throw the ball, he said Thursday he has faith the decision by the Vikings to take Ponder with the 12th overall pick was a good one. Harvin also expressed confidence that if the NFL lockout continues he will get some work in with his new teammate.
"I'm confident in our staff," Harvin told KELO-TV sports director Matt Holsen while in Sioux Falls, S.D. for a charity event. "I'm always a believer in our front office. They called me and said they had seen something in Ponder for what they were trying to establish in our system. They went with him, so we'll see what happens."
Ponder was put in contact with Harvin shortly after being drafted and during the brief time in late April when the lockout was lifted. At that point, Ponder expressed optimism that Harvin would be joining him to do some work in Florida. Ponder, of course, attended Florida State and Harvin went to Florida.
"We texted each other a few times," Harvin said. "We hope to get together in the near future. We'll see what happens with this lockout, but I think if [an agreement] doesn't happen pretty here soon, I think we'll get together."
Asked about the lockout and if he expects it to end anytime soon, Harvin said: "I hope so. It's out of my hands. The only thing I can do is control what I can control and that's keeping my body in tip top shape so whenever this thing works out, I'll be ready to play football."
