A Lino Lakes police officer was accidentally shot on Thursday afternoon during firearms training at a practice range in Coon Rapids.

The officer was in critical but stable condition on Thursday evening at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, according to Colleen Kniffin, a physician at the hospital.

He was in surgery on Thursday evening after being rushed to the hospital as metro law enforcement agencies and the State Patrol cleared roads to make way for the emergency vehicle.

Anoka County officials haven't identified the officer, a three-year veteran of the Lino Lakes department. Three Lino Lakes officers were shooting handguns during training at the Anoka County Law Enforcement Range when the accident occurred. The officer was shot in the abdomen, possibly by a ricochet.

The Coon Rapids Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will investigate.
