A 36-year-old woman from La Crosse, Wis., was critically injured late Saturday when the van she was driving struck a cow on Interstate 90 south of Lewiston, Minn., in Winona County, and rolled over, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The westbound lanes of I-90 were closed for about an hour to clear the crash and to land a medical helicopter to ferry Svetlana Y. Schmitz to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester after her van hit the cow just before 10:30 p.m.
Her passenger, Tatyana Grigorieskaya, 62, of La Crosse, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to St. Marys.
Both women were wearing seat belts, the patrol said.
