Project goal: Design a low-cost house for three dogs and two people that fits into its country setting. Size: About 2,000 square feet with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a private study and a screened porch off the kitchen. Location: A 155-acre farmstead in western Wisconsin Architect: Wayne Branum, SALA Architects, Minneapolis Construction cost: $100 per square foot (in 2000; the cost would be considerably more today because of price increases for labor and materials) Inspiration: Agrarian outbuildings and farmhouses
