SANTIAGO, CHILE - Bad weather has kept cleanup experts from containing a nearly mile-long fuel spill caused when an Antarctic cruise ship struck an iceberg and sank last week, Chilean officials said.
The narrow spill is penned in for now by large chunks of ice, but officials want to install boom barriers to isolate the slick.
About 50,000 gallons of diesel fuel, 6,300 gallons of lubricant and 260 gallons of gasoline were on board when the Explorer sank. Diesel is the least harmful type of hydrocarbon product, Chilean officials said at a news conference Thursday.
All aboard the Explorer were rescued by another ship.
