Vikings plan private workouts with QBs

Auburn's Cam Newton and Arkansas' Ryan Mallett held their Pro Days on their campuses on Tuesday so it was interesting to see Vikings vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman at the Gophers Pro Day instead.

Spielman, who oversees the Vikings draft, cautioned not to read anything into that.

"There’s a game plan in place," he said. "We will see all those guys either privately or at some point. They will all be covered I can guarantee you that."
Spielman is never one to tip his hand when it comes to draft or personnel questions, but he said the Vikings had coaches and/or scouts at both Auburn and Arkansas on Tuesday.
Joining Spielman at the Gophers Pro Day were director of player personnel George Paton and new quarterbacks coach Craig Johnson.
Presumably, that meant head coach Leslie Frazier, offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave and director of college scouting Scott Studwell split up the Auburn and Arkansas Pro Days.
The Vikings are hoping to identify a franchise quarterback in this draft so Spielman indicated the team also will conduct private workouts potentially with several of the prospects. A private workout allows the team to spend an entire day with a prospect, on and off the field, to get a better feel for that quarterback.
Spielman obviously wouldn't identify which quarterbacks they will meet with in that setting.
"I set up all the private workouts," he said. "I talked to the school, the agents, the kid. We have a specific game plan that we will follow when we go in and do the private workouts."
As far as Pro Days, Spielman said he will attend one every day next week and a number of them this month, along with the coaching staff and scouts.
"We’ll be traveling a lot especially through the month of March," he said. "We’ll conduct some private workouts with players. We have guys all over the country now. But it gives you one more opportunity to get to know these kids a little bit better."
Spielman touched on a few other subjects:
-- On signing defensive end Brian Robison to a three-year deal last week: "I think when he got in there I think he showed what we call blue traits as a pass rusher and he’s been very productive when you look at the amount of plays he’s got and what he did with those plays."
-- On negotiations with Sidney Rice: "We’ll just see how that goes. We’ve said we want Sidney back and we’ll do everything possible that we can to get him back once we’re able to start negotiating again."
-- On Gophers quarterback Adam Weber's workout: "[He] had a very good workout today. Watching him throw, set in the pocket, his accuracy, how well he threw the ball. Unfortunately he wasn’t at the combine but he had a very good workout today so we’ll go ahead and put him the mix and compare him to what we already know about some of the kids we saw at the combine."
