Goldy Gopher apparently isn’t your average mascot. The University of Minnesota’s top rodent beat out national competition to win first place among Division IA schools.
More than 200 spirit teams competed last weekend in the annual college cheer and dance team championships at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando.
In addition to Goldy Gopher, the University of Minnesota took home first-place awards in pom and jazz, third place in the all-girl cheer competition and 12th place in the cheer performance.
The University of St. Thomas won first place in the open hip-hop competition and second place in the open jazz performance.
The College of St. Benedict came in 10th place in open jazz, and St. Cloud State University came in 12th.
Minnesota State University-Moorhead won second place in the open pom competition.
