Brian Murphy won't have to wonder about his employment any longer.

The Vikings special teams coordinator, who was left waiting to see if he would keep his job while the Vikings interviewed at least one other person for the position, was named to the same coordinator's position with the Carolina Panthers on Monday.

The Vikings interviewed Broncos special teams coach Mike Priefer a week ago Monday.

Murphy was hired by new Panthers coach Ron Rivera.

"I’m thankful for my opportunity [in Minnesota]," Murphy said. "Thanks to the Wilfs and the whole Vikings organization over the past five years we made some fantastic friends and it will always feel like home to us. ... I appreciated my time here and certainly appreciated every guy that played for me. [Kicker Ryan] Longwell, [long snapper Cullen] Loeffler, [punter Chris] Kluwe.

"I think that for the first two years of being a coordinator to have those three guys made it the way it turned out be. They gave me everything they had and I appreciate it greatly. I can't tell you how much I appreciated every guy that lined up for me and played on special teams because they made it work."

Murphy was the Vikings' assistant special teams coach from 2006-08 before being named the coordinator in 2009. He replaced Paul Ferraro, who left to become the linebackers coach for the St. Louis Rams.

The Vikings still haven't set their staff and have openings at quarterbacks coach, running backs coach, offensive line coach, linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. It's also not clear if Darrell Bevell will be retained as offensive coordinator or replaced by Josh McDaniels, who interviewed for the job on Jan. 7 but also talked to the Rams last Saturday.

It's looking more and more as if the Vikings want to announce all the new hires at once. Former San Francisco coach Mike Singletary is expected to be named linebackers coach and Fred Pagac will be promoted to defensive coordinator.
