Word of mouth: Time for dorm dumpster dives

While many colleges are starting to adopt recycling programs for students' rejects, there was no shortage of sofas, futons, papasans and carpet remnants in or near the Dumpsters last week.

Dumpster divers tend to be as secretive as anglers in safeguarding their sweet spots -- but we aren't. While Augsburg, Concordia and Macalester colleges have completed their spring semesters, there are still choice spots for finding free furnishings. Check websites for campus maps, last day of classes, finals and graduation date. Here's when and where to go diving:

Carleton College

When: Furnishings are rounded up in the dorms for a garage sale open to the public from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 15-16 and 8 a.m. to noon June 17. Proceeds benefit the Northfield area Special Olympics, Northfield Union of Youth and Project Friendship. Where: The West Gym on the Carleton campus. Info:

When: Now. Where: Near Stadium Village between SE. Delaware and Fulton Sts. west of SE. Oak St. in Minneapolis. Look for Dumpsters between Centennial, Territorial, Pioneer and Frontier halls.

Hamline University
