One last Crosstown closing, then weave is unwoven

For the 18th and final time, expect construction-related delays this weekend if you're traveling through the nearly completed Interstate 35W/Crosstown area.

Then Monday morning, it's the final major road detangle of the $288 million project: Beginning at Diamond Lake Road, southbound 35W and Crosstown Hwy. 62 will, for the first time, not share the same lanes, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.


Westbound Crosstown through the Minneapolis-Richfield Commons area, starting at 10 p.m. Friday. Expect intermittent lane closures on southbound 35W between Diamond Lake and 66th Street. Southbound 35W ramps to the Crosstown also will be closed at times. All lanes and ramps should reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, MnDOT said.


Westbound Crosstown traffic will be directed to south Cedar Avenue, then I-494 west to north Hwy. 100.


This weekend's closures are to apply striping to move motorists into 35W's new permanent southbound lanes. Work continues for a few more weeks on transit toll lanes, which are set to open Nov. 19.


At 5 a.m. Monday, southbound 35W traffic at Diamond Lake Road will separate into lanes designated for either the Crosstown or 35W. Crosstown-bound traffic heading east and west will do so from the right lanes, MnDOT said.

This represents the final separation of the two freeways, which have been joined in the commons area -- to the chagrin of stressed motorists --since the 1960s.

Work on the project began in 2007. A ribbon-cutting celebration is set for Nov. 13.
