A Minnesota man whose dog got loose on a busy freeway was in critical condition Sunday after he was struck by a car while trying to catch the dog.

Joshua James Davis, of St. Michael, walked out into the eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 near Hudson, Wis., about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in an effort to catch his dog and was struck by a car, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Davis, 33, was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. The 18-year-old driver of the car, Samantha Russell of Lindstrom, Minn., was not hurt. Neither was her passenger, Brandon Mueller, 20, also from Lindstrom.

One of the dogs was hit by a car and died at the scene, while the other one survived and was taken into the custody of animal control officers.

Two of the three eastbound lanes on I-94 near the site were closed for about two hours as officials cleared the scene.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating.
