DeLaSalle • Basketball
With or without Reid Travis, DeLaSalle is one of the metro’s most talented basketball teams. Anim, a 6-4 junior forward, knows it’s time for the rest of the Islanders to step forward and prove it.
He did just that Saturday by scoring a career-high 29 points as the Islanders pulled out a 59-53 victory over Chicago St. Rita in the Timberwolves Shootout at Target Center. Anim made nine of 12 shots from the field, converted 11 of 12 free throw attempts and helped set the tone for the game when he turned back-to-back steals into layups in the first half.
“I’m supposed to be one of the top players on this team,” Anim said. “Jarvis [Johnson] was having an off game, so I knew it was time for me to step up and lead.”
As a member of the two-time defending Class 3A champions, Anim said he understands that no one is feeling sorry for his team without its star player, and the Islanders are getting every opponent’s best effort. And that the way he prefers it.
“We know everyone wants to beat the state champions,” he said. “So we don’t underestimate anyone. We hate losing. We have all the aspects of a great team, but we know how we have to play every game.”
Cretin-Derham Hall • Wrestling
The senior 195-pounder, who recently accepted an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, had six pins last week, including four consecutive in the North St. Paul Duals. His pin of a St. Paul Johnson opponent clinched the team title for the Raiders.
Lakeville South • Swimming
The senior was the only Minnesotan to have three first-place finishes in the Maroon Division of Saturday’s Maroon and Gold Invitational. He won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 47.55 seconds, the 500 freestyle (4:48.66) and anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay team.
Hill-Murray • Hockey
The sophomore forward helped the Pioneers to four victories, highlighted by the championship of the Kaposia Classic. She had two goals and five assists on the week and leads the team in scoring with 11 goals and 21 points.
Park of Cottage Grove • Basketball
There is no resting on reputation for the senior guard. Barely three weeks after she broke the school-career scoring record, Lamberty scored a career-high 43 points in a 68-44 rout of Cretin-Derham Hall.
Apple Valley • Wrestling
With one match to go, Apple Valley and Oak Park/River Valley (Ill.), the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, were tied in the deciding match of The Clash National Duals. The undefeated 152-pound junior came through with a 4-2 victory, lifting the Eagles to their fifth Clash title.
Roseville • Gymnastics
The freshman helped the Raiders to the Division I team championship at the MGGOA Invitational on Saturday, winning the all-around championship with a score of 37.275. Strecker also won the balance beam (9.325) and took second in floor exercise (9.375).
