House Speaker Paul Thissen and Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk, the top DFL leaders in the Legislature, called on their GOP counterparts to join in support for a disaster relief special session on Monday, Sept. 9.

"The Minnesota Legislature has a strong history of providing disaster relief in a timely and bipartisan manner," read their letter, addressed to House Minority Leader Kurt Daudt, R-Crown, and Senate Minority Leader David Hann, R-Eden Prairie.

The DFL leaders said in addition to providing the state match for federal disaster relief for June storms, the session could repeal a sales tax on farm equipment repair that just went into effect.

"We request your support in proceeding forward with a Special session to address FEMA disaster assistance and elimination of the farm equipment repair sales tax," the letter read.

Gov. Mark Dayton, who alone has the power to call a special session, supported a brief session for a limited agenda after Labor Day.
