The "Comeback Kid" will be in Minnesota to celebrate the "Happy Warrior."
On Aug. 4, workers will install a 7-foot bronze statue of former Vice President Hubert Humphrey, a Democrat known as the "Happy Warrior," and former President Bill Clinton, once dubbed the "Comeback Kid," will be on hand for the occasion.
Already at the site, at the intersection of John Ireland and Martin Luther King boulevards, waits a pedestal, a garden and walls etched with Humphrey quotes.
The former president, along with former Vice President Walter Mondale, Gov. Mark Dayton, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, former Gov. Arne Carlson and former Minnesota Attorney General Hubert "Skip" Humphrey, the late Vice President Humphrey's son, will be on hand to celebrate the filling of the pedestal, according to a release from Hubert H. Humphrey memorial fund organizers. The dedication will include a public program at 4:30 p.m.
Among the Humphrey quotations on the walls is one that still is oft-repeated by some who work inside the Capitol: "The moral test of government is how it treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the aged; and those in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped."
The evening of the statue dedication, Clinton will speak at the DFL's Humphrey-Mondale dinner, a significant fundraiser for the DFL Party.
