The Maplewood City Council will hold a special election in conjunction with the Nov. 6 general election to fill the City Council seat held by James Llanas. Llanas announced last month that he will resign from the council Oct. 31.
In his June 29 resignation letter, Llanas said that it had been a privilege serving as a council member and that he was proud of his accomplishments. He was elected in 2009 and cited personal reasons for stepping down.
"After much personal reflection and thoughtful dialogue with my family, we have decided to sell our home," Llanas wrote. "Rest assured this was not an easy decision, but one that is best for my family. I look forward to seeing all the wonderful things Maplewood has in its bright future."
Candidates interested in filling out his term will be able to file from July 31 to Aug. 14. The person elected will be sworn in as a City Council member on Nov. 20 and serve until Jan. 6, 2014.
