A day after her gun bill passed the Minnesota Senate and the week she was pitted against a colleague in redistricting maps, state Sen. Gretchen Hoffman announced she will run against U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson.

The Republican first-term senator from Vergas will have competition in the race. Republican Lee Byberg has been vying for the seat almost since he lost to Peterson by about 18 percentage points.

In making her announcement Friday, her campaign said, Hoffman "vowed to give Congressman Collin Peterson his toughest challenge to date."

Peterson, whose district runs along the western edge of Minnesota, has long had huge margins of victory in his re-election races. His 18 percentage point winning margin in 2010 was relatively close for him. In recent years, he has won re-election with around 70 percent of the vote.

Under the new maps, Peterson, a former House agriculture chair and a conservative Democrat, has a district that includes a few more Republican areas than his previous district, which was also Republican-leaning. He has said he is satisfied with the new maps and said that he plans to run for re-election.
