One day after the GOP-led Legislature ended its regular session, DFL Gov. Mark Dayton vetoed every appropriations bill except the bill for agriculture, which was signed earlier this year. The bill totals reflect Republican spending targets, which Dayton said were too low.

K-12: $14.1 BILLION

Allocates state money to every public school in Minnesota. Funding is doled out largely through per-pupil funding levels set by lawmakers.

HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES: $10.7 BILLION

Funds state-subsidized health care for about 800,000 poor, elderly or disabled Minnesotans.

HIGHER EDUCATION: $2.5 BILLION

Sends the University of Minnesota and MnSCU more than $1 billion each in state aid. Also funds student financial aid programs.

JUDICIARY AND PUBLIC SAFETY: $1.7 BILLION

Funds corrections, criminal apprehension, public defense, community service and other public safety activities. Allocates money for Minnesota's District Courts, Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.

STATE GOVERNMENT: $600 MILLION

Sets funding levels for the dozens of agencies, offices and boards that constitute state government. Breaks down where money should be allocated within those areas.

ENVIRONMENT: $200 MILLION

Allocates money for agencies such as the Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Also funds the Board of Water and Soil Resources and the Minnesota Zoo.

JOBS: $140 MILLION

Directs money to a variety of programs and funds administered by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development to spur economic growth. Also funds subsidized housing initiatives.

TRANSPORTATION: $62 MILLION

Largely directs dedicated gas and vehicle taxes and registration fees to road and bridge improvements. The small general fund portion has emphasized spending on transit.

TAXES: $2.5 BILLION

Sets Minnesota's income tax rates and allocates aid to cities and counties across the state. Also specifies tax exemptions.
