Two Minnesotans have been elected national co-chairs of the Green Party, making up half of the party's steering committee.
The party announced Thursday that Farheen Hakeem and David Strand were elected by the 200 members of its national committee.
Under the party's banner, Hakeem, has unsuccessfully run for Minneapolis mayor, Hennepin County Board and the Minnesota House of Representatives.
A community organizer, Hakeem is the highest-ranking Muslim woman in any of the nation's political parties, according to the Greens.
Strand is politics co-chair of the state's Green Party and party treasurer in the Third Congressional District.
He is a founding member of the Lavender Green Caucus, which represents gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Greens, and he is a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.
