Saints to counter recount with humor

Dean Barkley, former senator and founder of the Independence Party, will be the starring attraction of what the team has dubbed "Recount Night."

Last update: May 13, 2009 - 8:48 PM

The St. Paul Saints and the Minnesota Independence Party have joined forces to make hay out of the state's never-ending U.S. Senate race.

Dean Barkley, who ran third behind Republican Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken, will throw out the first pitch at the Saints game on May 23.

The former senator and co-founder of the Independence Party will be the starring attraction of what the team has dubbed "Recount Night."

COUNT VON COUNT: In a knock-off of the "Sesame Street" vampire character Count von Count, the Saints also are giving away Count von "Re"Count bobblehead dolls to the first 2,500 fans. The doll has the likeness of Coleman on one side and Franken on the other.

Among other recount-themed activities, the Saints will conduct a "color inside the oval" contest, a reference to ballots that were inartfully filled in by some voters last November.

The Independence Party is piggybacking on the team, conducting a fund-raiser by selling $25 tickets to the game against the Sioux Falls Canaries.

The tickets, the party announced, will not be "available through the Saints ticket office, Ticketmaster or scalpers. For just $25 you will receive a ticket to the game, tailgate party and discuss your recount frustrations with Dean."
