The Minnesota Senate has approved a $329 million public works bill to fix up college buildings, renovate St. Paul's Como Zoo and expand the St. Cloud Civic Center.

The bill passed easily, with only eight no votes, after senators narrowly turned back an attempt to strip $11 million from the zoo and spend it instead on housing programs. That amendment fell three votes short.

House GOPers weigh in on stimulus money

A group of Republican House members say they would reject up to $240 million in federal economic stimulus money that isn't tied to specific programs.

Those stimulus dollars could help Minnesota fill a $4.6 billion budget deficit. But the lawmakers say the money will also make the federal deficit grow, and that could be a problem in the future.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty has said Minnesota will accept all of the stimulus funds available even though he opposes parts of the plan.
