Humorist/musician/author Kinky Friedman is considering another run for governor of Texas, citing the Senate race run by Al Franken as a precedent that makes it plausible.
Friedman, who ran fourth in a 2006 bid for the job, noted Franken's competitive (if still inconclusive) campaign this year.
"So this can be done," Friedman told the Associated Press.
Friedman said his last gubernatorial bid proved to him he couldn't win as an independent and that he shouldn't have cracked as many jokes as he did on hte campaign trail.
"I'm toning down the one-liners a bit. If I run, it's going to be a serious run," Friedman said, adding that next time he would run as a Democrat.
Friendman's campaign three years ago had deep Minnesota roots, with former Sen. Dean Barkley managing it and Minneapolis adman Bill Hillsman creating his commercials. In addition, former Gov. Jesse Ventura barnstormed the state with Friedman during the heat of the race.
Governor: Tim Pawlenty
One of only a few prominent Republicans to win a competitive re-election contest in the Democratic sweep of 2006, Tim Pawlenty is widely seen as politically shrewd and naturally likable.
