VIRGINIA, Minn. - The Virginia mayor and City Council members are sharing the budget pain by voting to take 10 percent pay cuts.
Virginia's elected officials voted unanimously, but informally, for the cut during a meeting Monday. They are expected to make it official during a meeting Tuesday night.
Before the cut, the mayor made $500 a month, or $6,000 annually. Each council member made $300 a month, or $3,600 a year. The 10 percent cut will save $2,760.
Like most other cities in Minnesota, Virginia is bracing for big cuts in state aid as Gov. Tim Pawlenty and the Legislature try to plug a nearly $5 billion hole in the state budget.
Virginia city leaders have already asked all of their department heads to present them with plans to reduce each department's budget by 10 percent.
