Ballot counting to resume today

Last update: November 24, 2008 - 8:23 AM

Following a day off on Sunday, ballot sorting will continue today as the recount resumes in the U.S. Senate race between Republican Norm Coleman and DFL challenger Al Franken.

Less than 0.5 of 1 percent separated the two men in the Nov. 4 election, with Coleman on top of Franken. Since then, the numbers have changed somewhat with Coleman ahead by about 180 votes as of Sunday night.

"I think everyone was happy to have a day off," Secretary of State Mark Ritchie said Sunday.

He said the city of Minnetonka was going to count on Sunday but decided to hold off until today.

He said about 65 percent of the state vote has been counted. Anywhere from 30 to 40 counties still have to finish or even start the recount process.

But Ritchie said that should not be a problem in meeting the Dec. 5 deadline his office set for the recount.

"We are definitely on track to get done on time," he said.
