Pawlenty seeks to paint the state green

Last update: November 10, 2008 - 9:11 PM

MAKING 'JOBZ' MORE RENEWABLE: Tax breaks would be offered to renewable-energy projects in a green version of the Job Opportunity Building Zones program. This "Green JOBZ" would be open to qualifying businesses anywhere in Minnesota for up to 12 years. The cost to the state would be $3.65 million in 2010-11 and $6.6 million in 2012-13.

STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT: Investors who park their money in regional investment funds -- which help start-up companies -- could get tax credits totaling $20 million over four years. Half of the credits would be focused on renewable energy businesses.

SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL: Another tax credit would offer insurance companies $60 million for putting money into companies with fewer than 100 employees. Half would have to go to green ventures.

USING SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SOURCES: Utilities that substitute biomethane for natural gas or use solar power could get credit for conserving energy under the state's policy goals.
