Deadline for pre-registering is Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Last update: October 13, 2008 - 10:00 PM

The deadline to pre-register to vote in the Nov. 4 election is 5 p.m. today. Here are answers to a few relevant questions.

Who can vote? With a few exceptions, you are eligible to vote in Minnesota if you are a U.S. citizen who will be at least 18 years old by Election Day, and will have lived in the state at least 20 days immediately before Election Day.

I've voted before; do I have to register again? If you are currently registered to vote, you don't have to register again unless you have: moved to a different address since you last voted; changed your name since you last voted or not voted in the past four years. If you recently returned from active military duty and last registered to vote where you were deployed, you may have to re-register here in Minnesota.

Where can I pre-register? You can pre-register at your city or county elections office during regular hours today. To get a jump on things, you can download a registration form from various websites (your county's or the secretary of state's, for example -- www.sos.state.mn.us).

What if I don't pre-register? If you miss the pre-registration deadline, you can register at your polling place on Election Day. More information on what you'll need specifically is available at the secretary of state's and other websites, including the Star Tribune's Politically Connected website at www.startribune.com/politics.
