Cancer slows, doesn't stop, GOP hopeful from Burnsville

Last update: October 7, 2008 - 9:36 PM

The Republican candidate from Burnsville for the Minnesota House has cancer but plans to continue his campaign.

Todd Johnson "had cancer a little over 10 years ago, and it has now returned," campaign manager Ron Hill said Tuesday. "He has decided that life goes on and he will continue, but apologizes in the short term for the fact that this will limit his ability to door-knock and attend candidate forums."

The return of the cancer was diagnosed just more than a week ago, Hill said. "It's tough for him right now even to talk on the phone. He is in treatment. We're not going to say what kind of treatment, but it's a pretty strenuous regimen."

Johnson, 50, married and the father of five school-age kids, is challenging Rep. Will Morgan, a first-term DFLer who could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.

The Republican candidate is also a member of the school board for the Burnsville district and the chairman of the state Board of Teaching. He will continue to carry out those duties, Hill said.

"He is wading through board packets and is going to keep answering candidate questionnaires for the campaign," he said.

District 40A was one of a wave that fell into DFL control in 2006 and is a prime example of the kind of suburban district the Republicans are eager to win back.

Governor: Tim Pawlenty
One of only a few prominent Republicans to win a competitive re-election contest in the Democratic sweep of 2006, Tim Pawlenty is widely seen as politically shrewd and naturally likable.
