Pawlenty seeks aid for 4 southeast counties

Gov. Tim Pawlenty today asked President Bush to declare a federal disaster in Fillmore, Freeborn, Houston and Mower counties.

Last update: June 17, 2008 - 8:23 PM

Gov. Tim Pawlenty on Tuesday asked President Bush to declare a federal disaster in four southeastern Minnesota counties hit by floods that caused millions of dollars in damage earlier this month.

In his letter, Pawlenty said about $8.3 million in public infrastructure had been destroyed or damaged in Fillmore, Freeborn, Houston and Mower counties. The flooding was caused by days of heavy rain that began June 7, he added.

If Bush signs a disaster declaration, the counties would be eligible for federal funding through the public assistance program to repair infrastructure and remove debris. Pawlenty asked to reserve the right to seek further relief for individuals, unemployment help and crisis counseling.

He told Bush that roads, bridges, parks, homes and businesses have been hardest hit by the flooding. Wastewater plants in Preston and Lanesboro were forced to shut down, he wrote, and tourist facilities in the scenic region have been severely damaged. Pawlenty issued state emergency declarations for the counties last week.
