Two Minnetonka sixth-graders who went on a class trip to the state Capitol last spring have put their civics lesson to work by launching a campaign to have ice hockey proclaimed the official state game.
Minnetonka Middle School East students Brendan Broviak and Hannah Ehreshman will appear at the Capitol at 3 p.m. today with state Sen. Gen Olson, R-Minnetrista, for a committee hearing on their proposal.
Broviak and Ehreshman, both 11, developed the idea as fifth-graders at Groveland Elementary School after their class trip and classroom discussions about citizens' role in government.
The proposal has gained bipartisan support with a Republican and DFLers joining Olson as co-authors of the bill. It will be heard by the Senate's State and Local Government Operations and Oversight Committee.
"I'm not nervous," Broviak said. "I'm ready to answer any questions they might have."

One of only a few prominent Republicans to win a competitive re-election contest in the Democratic sweep of 2006, Tim Pawlenty is widely seen as politically shrewd and naturally likable.
