Proposed sales tax rise gets rousing 'no,' poll says

Last update: February 25, 2008 - 10:24 PM

A SurveyUSA poll found that 64 percent of Minnesotans think a constitutional amendment to raise the state sales tax for the outdoors and arts is a bad idea.

The poll of 500 adults, sponsored by KSTP-TV, found that 32 percent said they thought the amendment would be a good idea.

The highest level of disapproval, 73 percent, was in southern Minnesota.

The highest level of approval was in northeast Minnesota, at 35 percent.

The ballot question, which passed the Legislature earlier this month, would ask voters in November whether the state Constitution should be amended to raise the sales tax by three-eighths of 1 percent, with the revenue dedicated to the environment, conservation and the arts.

The poll, conducted Thursday, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
