Cohen to exit DFL campaign for U.S. Senate

Last update: January 31, 2008 - 11:03 PM

Attorney and environmental activist Jim Cohen is withdrawing from the U.S. Senate race for personal and financial reasons, he said Thursday.

Cohen, 65, a self-described "pragmatic progressive" from Minneapolis who had been seeking the DFL Party endorsement to challenge incumbent Republican Sen. Norm Coleman, said that his campaign's limited resources and the health of his father were factors in his decision to end his six-month-old candidacy.

Cohen is leaving the race on the eve of Tuesday's DFL caucuses, the first real test of strength for the DFL candidates vying for Coleman's seat. Cohen said he has no plans for now to endorse anyone in the field, which includes Mike Ciresi, Al Franken and Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer.
