State fundraiser planned for Obama

Last update: July 23, 2008 - 7:49 PM

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is headed back to Minnesota in early August for a private fundraiser.

According to an invitation, Obama will be at a downtown Minneapolis hotel on Aug. 6. The Democratic National Committee will share in the contributions. Donors are being asked to contribute between $1,000 and $28,500, with those raising or giving the larger amount invited to a dinner. A $5,000 check gets donors into a private photo reception.

BUSH TO ADDRESS RNC ON OPENING NIGHT

President Bush will come to St. Paul to address delegates of the Republican National Convention on Sept. 1, the first night of the gathering.

White House press secretary Dana Perino announced Bush's plans Wednesday morning. That put an end to intense speculation among Republicans about Bush's role at the convention and how his presence could best help boost John McCain's candidacy.

MCcain's town-hall message is energy

McCain got warm applause Wednesday in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., when he pledged to build more nuclear power plants and support offshore oil drilling -- but his meeting was only half-full.

The cost of oil and gasoline is "on everybody's mind in this room," McCain said.

During the hourlong town meeting, he reiterated his support for suspending the federal 18.4-cents-a-gallon gasoline tax until Labor Day.

MCcain can be

A berliner, too

The Republican National Committee decided to have a little fun with Obama's widely anticipated speech today at Berlin's Victory Column. Anti-Obama radio ads will be aired in Berlin's namesakes in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and New Hampshire. The 60-second ad accuses Obama of voting against allocating money for military troops.
