WASHINGTON - President Bush offered some advice Tuesday to Barack Obama as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee prepares to visit Iraq: Stay away from politics and pay attention to the advice of U.S. and Iraqi officials there.
With such groups as MoveOn.org "banging on the candidates," Bush said, any politician making recommendations for new policy in Iraq should listen to what U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker and Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces there, have to say, along with the views of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and other Iraqi leaders.
"I would ask him to listen carefully," Bush said during a news conference at the White House.
Responding to a charge leveled earlier in the day by Obama, Bush disputed that the war in Iraq had distracted his administration from other threats, including the resurgence of the Taliban and Al-Qaida in Afghanistan.
At the same time, he acknowledged the worsening violence in Afghanistan, which he called "a tough fight" against a "tough enemy."
"You know, I understand exhaustion; I understand people are getting tired," he said, turning the question about Obama's criticism into a broad defense of his conduct of the war against Al-Qaida and other terrorists. "But I would hope that whoever follows me understands that we're at war, and now's not the time to give up in the struggle against this enemy."
