Stillwater doctor will challenge Bachmann in 2010

Last update: May 6, 2009 - 8:33 PM

A physician who ran for lieutenant governor three years ago will make a run for Congress in Minnesota's Sixth District next year.

Dr. Maureen Reed, who ran as an Independence Party candidate in the 2006 gubernatorial race, said she plans to file as a DFL candidate for the seat currently held by Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann, who is serving her second term.

Reed will be facing off against Elwyn Tinklenberg, Bachmann's 2008 opponent, who said Wednesday that he's planning a third run for the seat.

Reed, a Stillwater resident, said she will seek the endorsement from both the DFL and Independence parties.

She said she wants to emphasize economic growth, home ownership and reductions in health care costs. She ran for lieutenant governor with the Independence Party's Peter Hutchinson in 2006. Their ticket got 6 percent of the vote.

Reed has been an executive at Aspen Medical Group and HealthPartners and is a former chairwoman of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents.

Tinklenberg, who served as state transportation commissioner under Gov. Jesse Ventura, had both the DFL and Independence party endorsements in his losing bid last fall. He said all his campaign structures were in place for another run, and he still has about $150,000 in the bank "that's going to help us get a good start."

He declined to say whether he would run if he is not endorsed, saying only that he would "do everything we can" to get the endorsement.

"I think we've earned their confidence," he said. "We've got an enormous head start, financially and in terms of name recognition and in national support."
