Obama's energy cap-and-trade plan has Bachmann talking about a revolution

Last update: March 24, 2009 - 12:10 PM

WASHINGTON - Rep. Michele Bachmann is mad about taxes and she wants taxpayers to revolt.

But don't reach for your gun yet.

According to a spokesman in her office, the Minnesota Republican was speaking metaphorically this weekend when she said in a radio interview that she wants "people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue of the energy tax because we need to fight back."

The energy tax at issue is the Obama administration's budget proposal to raise $646 billion through a cap-and-trade plan to curb carbon emissions to fight global warming.

During a radio show on Saturday, Bachmann announced two cap-and-trade forums that she will be holding in her district on April 9, one in St. Cloud and the other in Woodbury. According to an aide, Bachmann said she wants Minnesotans to have all the information they need regarding President Obama's plan.

"Thomas Jefferson told us, having a revolution every now and then is a good thing, and the people -- we the people -- are going to have to fight back hard if we're not going to lose our country," Bachmann said in the interview on WWTC-AM. "I think this has the potential of changing the dynamic of freedom forever in the United States."

Bachmann also announced Monday that she has introduced legislation to bar the Obama administration from sending any detainees from the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, anywhere in Minnesota.

Obama has said he wants to close the Guantanamo prison.
